Ikeja, Lagos – In a timely reminder amid a surge in fraudulent schemes targeting aspiring U.S. visa applicants, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria has issued a stark warning against scammers and so-called "visa consultants" peddling fake job offers, work visas, and processing guarantees.
The advisory, shared via the mission's official social media accounts, underscores the embassy's zero-tolerance stance on fraud, emphasizing that legitimate processes remain free, transparent, and accessible only through verified government channels.
The post, which features an animated video highlighting common red flags, arrives as Nigerians continue to face heightened scrutiny in U.S. visa applications.
"Beware of scammers and 'visa consultants' offering jobs, work visas, or guarantees," the message reads.
It explicitly states that the U.S. Embassy will never solicit payments via unauthorized platforms, promise visas or expedited processing for fees, or charge for application forms available for free on official sites. Applicants are urged to double-check websites, noting that genuine U.S. government domains end in ".gov"; anything else is likely a trap.
This latest alert builds on a series of aggressive measures by the U.S. Mission throughout 2025 to combat visa fraud, a persistent issue in Nigeria where economic pressures and high demand for overseas opportunities have fueled a thriving black market for forged documents and bogus services.
In July, the mission announced lifetime U.S. entry bans for fraud perpetrators, vowing to pursue criminal charges against those involved in document falsification or harboring illegal entrants.
Similar warnings were reiterated in September, extending potential visa denials to high-profile Nigerian figures implicated in corruption, as part of broader enforcement tightening.
These steps align with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration priorities on border security, including a September proclamation restricting certain nonimmigrant worker entries.
