Ukwa, Abia — A 2-kilometre road project awarded for construction under the 2024 Federal Government budget has drawn public criticism following reports of poor execution and abandonment.

According to a review by Tracka, the budget details revealed that ₦100 million was allocated for the construction of the Ohanso–Obunku–Obohia Link Road in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.

However, a recent field visit by Tracka team revealed that while a section of the road has been asphalted, the work done was substandard, and large portions of the road remain untouched.

Residents of the area expressed frustration over the inconsistent presence of the contractor, alleging that work has been irregular since the project began.

The project is being implemented by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI). Concerned citizens are now calling on the agency to release full details of the contract, including the name of the contractor, the expected completion timeline, and measures being taken to ensure quality assurance.

The Ohanso–Obunku–Obohia Link Road serves as a major access route connecting several rural communities in Ukwa East, and its completion is expected to ease transportation and improve local trade.

As of the time of filing this report, NBRRI has not issued an official statement regarding the concerns raised by residents and civil observers.
