'Effurun-Sapele-Benin road a national disgrace', Group writes Tinubu

Warri, Delta – The Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) has raised alarm over the worsening state of the Effurun-Sapele-Benin Road, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent action to save the region’s economy from total collapse.

In an open letter addressed to the President, the NDYC described the road as a lifeline for trade and transport across the South-South region, now rendered nearly impassable due to severe deterioration.

Comrade Bene Youkore Mamamu, President of the Council, who signed the letter, lamented that economic activities have grounded to a halt as trailers and trucks conveying essential goods remain stranded for days, while road accidents continue to rise due to deep, waterlogged potholes.

“The Effurun-Sapele-Benin Road and the Benin-Sapele Expressway are key trade routes connecting several states. Their present condition is a national disgrace. We are witnessing increased accidents, toppled tankers, and businesses suffering heavy losses,” Mamamu stated.

The NDYC warned that continued neglect of the road could result in deadly explosions involving fuel and gas-laden trucks, putting countless lives at risk. The group emphasized that the current hardship faced by motorists and traders is avoidable and calls for immediate government intervention.

“We, the youths of the Niger Delta, write with a deep sense of urgency. The deplorable state of the Effurun-Sapele-Benin Road and the Benin-Sapele Expressway is not only disrupting our economy but threatening lives daily. These roads are riddled with massive potholes, posing serious hazards to road users, especially fuel tankers and LPG trucks. Without swift intervention, we fear the worst may happen.”

The group appealed to President Tinubu to prioritize the rehabilitation and long-term maintenance of the road, describing it as vital to the movement of agricultural produce, manufactured goods, and essential supplies in the region.

According to the NDYC, restoring the road will not only boost economic activity but also restore hope to a region that has long been neglected despite its contributions to the nation’s wealth.
