Court Sentences Three to Life Imprisonment Over Oriire School Abduction in Oyo

In a swift judgment, Justice Salim Ibrahim of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced three men to life imprisonment for their roles in the high-profile abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The convicts — Abdulrazak Umar also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid, Yunusa Musa also known as Yunusa Bin Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani also known as Abu Itisar were arraigned by the Department of State Services on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism.

They hail from Suleja Local Government Area in Niger State.

On May 15, 2026, armed gunmen on motorcycles attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA.

They abducted around 44 victims, including approximately 39 pupils and several teachers. Two teachers were killed in captivity.

The hostages endured 56 days in the forests before security forces rescued them on July 10, 2026.

The suspects faced charges including, Conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism through the kidnapping, knowing participation in terrorist acts, including abducting victims and demanding ransom, membership in a proscribed terrorist organization (Darul Salam, an affiliate of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, also known as Ansaru).

Also, Concealing information about the bandits’ activities, and additional allegations such as providing material support, incitement via a WhatsApp group, and illegal gold mining to finance terrorism.

The three pleaded guilty to key counts including count 4 and 6 during proceedings.

Justice Ibrahim convicted them accordingly and imposed life imprisonment, citing their admission of association with the bandits and membership in the banned group.

The charges were filed under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which prescribes life imprisonment for such offences where no death results directly from the convicted individuals’ actions.

This outcome follows the rescue operation, during which eight suspected kidnappers were reportedly arrested and others neutralized.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by Nigerian security agencies and the judiciary to tackle banditry and terrorism linked to school attacks.

The swift trial and conviction have been welcomed by many as a strong signal against terrorism, though some stakeholders have called for even stricter penalties in light of the murdered teachers.

The incident sparked national outrage and protests earlier this year.

The other suspects named in the charge sheet remain at large, even as authorities continue investigations into the broader network behind the abduction.

This sentencing underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to using the full weight of anti-terrorism laws to deter such crimes.
