Edo Police Condemn Officers After Viral Video Shows Assault on Passengers Who Refused ₦500 Bribe

Benin, Edo – A video circulating widely on social media has sparked outrage after it appeared to show police officers in Edo State physically confronting and assaulting passengers who allegedly refused to pay a ₦500 bribe.

The footage, shared on Saturday by X user @General_Somto, captures a tense roadside altercation between several individuals and armed officers in police camouflage uniforms.

In a swift response early Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Edo State Command, Eno Ikoedem (@EnoIkoedem), publicly condemned the officers’ actions.

“This is totally unacceptable and the Edo state Police Command strongly condemn the actions of the officers in this video. This is not the standard of professionalism expected of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force,” she wrote in a reply to the original post.

Ikoedem assured the public that the officers involved would be identified, investigated, and dealt with according to the law.

She also requested that the poster send further details via direct message or phone call to aid the investigation.

The incident highlights ongoing public concerns about police conduct and alleged extortion at checkpoints across Nigeria.
