Activist Victor Ojei, Known as 'Wong Box' arraigned, remanded

Asaba, Delta - In a significant development, Victor Ojei, a self-proclaimed human rights activist popularly known as "Wong Box," was arraigned today in a Delta State court on three counts of serious offenses.

The charges, which include threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence, were brought against him under sections 355, 86, and 249 of the criminal code.

The incident that led to Ojei's arrest and subsequent court appearance reportedly occurred on May 29, 2025, when staff members of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) attempted to disconnect electricity at his residence on Anyameluhor Street, Asaba, due to an outstanding bill amounting to ₦4,870,780.

According to police reports, Ojei allegedly attacked the BEDC staff with a cutlass, insisting that they must reconnect his compound.

The situation escalated when a pregnant BEDC worker fell during the commotion, and Ojei reportedly charged at her with the weapon.

Following the incident, Ojei was initially arrested on August 14, 2025, and charged with multiple offenses.

Despite being declared wanted by the Delta State Police Command for his alleged actions, he was re-arrested days later.

Today, he was remanded in prison custody pending when his bail conditions are met.

SP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, emphasized that "nobody is above the law," underscoring the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case.

The video evidence, which has circulated widely on social media, shows Ojei brandishing a cutlass and making threatening statements, further fueling public outrage and concern over the incident.

The case has sparked a broader discussion on the conduct of self-proclaimed activists and the accountability of individuals, regardless of their public persona.
