Abuja – In a bold move to dismantle communication barriers and empower every child, the Federal Government of Nigeria has formalized a nationwide policy mandating the teaching and learning of sign language in all basic education schools.
The initiative, aimed at fostering truly inclusive classrooms, was unveiled amid celebrations for the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, underscoring a commitment to amplify the voices of girls with disabilities.
Dr. Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), announced the policy on Thursday, October 16, during UBEC's event in Abuja.
Themed “Lead a Change: Learn Sign Language Today,” the commemoration brought together pupils from special needs and regular schools, educators, ministry officials, and advocates to spotlight the transformative power of accessible education.
“This is not just a policy—it's a promise to ensure no girl suffers in silence,” Garba declared, emphasizing that the framework will equip learners with hearing impairments to fully engage in classroom activities.
Garba added, “Imagine a Nigeria where hospitals, banks, supermarkets, airports, and schools all have sign language interpreters. That's the barrier-free future we're building, one school at a time.”
