Abandoned Ijora causeway repairs spark outrage in Lagos

Ijora, Lagos – Residents and commuters in Lagos are raising alarm over the deplorable state of the Ijora Causeway, a critical roadway connecting the 7UP roundabout to Carter Bridge, following the abandonment of a government-funded repair project.

The issue, highlighted by a post on X by @monitng, has ignited calls for accountability and immediate action from federal authorities.

According to the post, the Federal Government allocated ₦414,411,854 in the 2024 budget for the repair of the failed sections of the Ijora Causeway under Project Code: ERGP12209973, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works. In August 2024, ₦224 million was released to RCUBIX LTD for the project’s execution.

While some sections of the road received concrete repairs, the 7UP roundabout and Badia Junction/U-turn remain in a state of disrepair.

Disturbingly, the contractor abandoned the site over three months ago, leaving the road in a hazardous condition.

The Ijora Causeway serves as a vital artery for thousands of Lagosians, linking residential areas to commercial hubs. The abandonment has worsened traffic gridlock, driving up transportation costs and causing significant losses for local businesses.

At night, the poorly maintained sections have become hotspots for criminal activities, including robbery, heightening fears among residents.

The @MonITNG has urged the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to probe the contractor and the implementing agency.

The Tracka team, which uncovered the funding details through the GovSpend platform, has been praised for its civic monitoring efforts. The post demands that the Federal Government recall RCUBIX LTD to complete the project to standard and ensure accountability for the ₦224 million already disbursed.

As of the time of this report, neither the Federal Ministry of Works nor the anti-corruption agencies have issued an official response.
