Reps pushes to connect Ode-Itsekiri to National electricity grid

Warri, Delta — On Tuesday, Thomas Ereyitomi, the member representing Warri Federal Constituency prominent representative, underscored the pressing need to connect Ode-Itsekiri, the ancestral homeland of the Itsekiri people in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, to the National Electricity Grid.

Despite its historical significance as one of Delta State’s first autonomous communities and its proximity to Warri City, Ode-Itsekiri remains disconnected, forcing residents and businesses to depend on costly and environmentally harmful diesel generators.

Speaking on the issue, Hon. Ereyitomi highlighted the community’s struggle with inadequate power supply, which has stifled economic growth and development.

The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has made limited efforts to rehabilitate and extend existing electricity infrastructure, but these measures have fallen short of providing a sustainable solution.

The reliance on diesel generators has imposed high operational costs on locals and posed environmental risks, further exacerbating the community’s challenges.

In response, the House has resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Power to prioritize connecting Ode-Itsekiri to the National Grid. This move is anticipated to deliver clean, safe, and reliable energy, boosting socio-economic activities and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

The Committee on Power has been tasked with overseeing the implementation and ensuring compliance with this critical development effort. Hon. Ereyitomi emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling it a matter of governmental responsibility to ensure equitable development across all regions.

As discussions gain momentum, stakeholders are hopeful that this initiative will address the long-standing electricity deficit in Ode-Itsekiri, marking a significant step toward inclusive growth in Delta State.
