Benin, Edo – A commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as an "Okada" rider, fell victim to extortion by a police officer attached to the Ewu Divisional Headquarters in Edo State.
The officer, identified as Suleiman Sadiq Abu with phone number 09032609070, allegedly demanded and collected ₦8,000 from the rider under duress.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about police misconduct in the region, where roadside extortion of motorists and commercial operators remains a persistent issue despite official directives promoting "bail is free" policies.
Swift action by activists from the Bail is Free Campaign organization proved pivotal in resolving the matter. Upon receiving a report of the extortion, the group intervened promptly, engaging with the Edo State Police Command to demand accountability.
Their efforts ensured the full ₦8,000 was refunded to the victim without further delay.
The Edo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident or confirm any disciplinary measures against Officer Suleiman Sadiq Abu.
Local residents and transport unions have praised the activists' role, calling for broader reforms to curb extortion and enhance police accountability.
