Nigeria Rolls Out Unified Tax ID System
Business/Economy
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has officially announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system, effective immediately.
In a public notice issued on Monday, May 18, 2026, the tax authorities stated that every taxable person in Nigeria is now required to obtain a Tax ID, in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.
The Tax ID is designed as a single, unified identifier for all taxpayers, replacing the existing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Validation API. It will enable seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels, consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and improve the overall efficiency of tax-related information management.
The key benefits highlighted by NRS and JRB are, Single Tax Identity: One Tax ID for all tax transactions and engagements, Simplified Compliance: Easier registration, filing, and payment processes, Improved Transparency: Better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records.
Other benefits are, Enhanced Revenue Assurance: Reduction in tax leakages and improved accountability, as well as Data Harmonization: Alignment of taxpayer information across all tiers of government.
The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery across Nigeria’s tax system.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organizations currently using the old TIN Validation API have been notified that the new Tax ID system is now in effect.
This development marks a significant step in the federal government’s tax reform agenda under the 2025 Tax Administration Act.
