Rights Group faults Extortion of motorists by Edo govt officials

Benin, Edo – A prominent human rights and advocacy organization in Edo State has raised concerns over alleged illegal money collection by some officials of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Office (MOT) in the Aduwawa area of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

The Comrade Justice Oni-Edigin-led AHMWFES The Bail is Free Campaign Organisation, stated through the group’s Eagle Eye Intelligence and Monitoring Team that reports have been received and documented alleging that certain MOT officials are involved in the unlawful collection of money from motorists operating within the Benin metropolis.

The organization emphasized that the allegations are currently under review, with ongoing efforts to verify the facts and gather additional evidence.

In a statement on Monday, the group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law in public service delivery.

“Members of the public who have relevant information, evidence, or experiences relating to these allegations are encouraged to come forward and assist in the investigation,” the statement added.

Further details are expected to be released as the probe progresses.

Motorists are advised to adhere strictly to legal requirements for vehicle inspection and documentation while remaining vigilant against any demands for unofficial payments.

This development comes amid broader public concerns over service delivery and potential corrupt practices at various government checkpoints and offices in parts of Edo State.

The organization urged anyone with credible information to contact its monitoring team to support the ongoing investigation.

No official response from the Motor Vehicle Inspection Office or the Edo State Government on the claims as of the time of filing this report.
