Edo Makes Strides in Flood, Erosion Control as Residents Hail Okpebholo’s Interventions

Benin, Edo – Residents of Benin City and surrounding areas are celebrating tangible progress by the Edo State Government in tackling perennial flooding and gully erosion, long-standing challenges that have plagued communities for years.
Under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state has recorded significant achievements along the Ekenhuan (Ekewan) Road axis through targeted interventions by the Edo State Flood and Erosion Control Agency, led by Hon. Okoyomoh Muhammed Allen Bawa.
Major Achievements on Ekenhuan Road
Key works completed or substantially advanced include rehabilitation of the 12.6 km Upper Ekenhuan Road, construction of road networks linking Catholic Charismatic/Ugbiyokho, reinforcement of drainage channels, and construction of the Ekenhuan Water Retention Point near the Army Barracks.
The water retention facility is specifically designed to capture excess runoff, significantly reducing flood risks in the Barracks and Ugbiyokho areas.
Assessment reports from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability confirm that the Ekenhuan gully erosion and flood control project has been fully completed.
These projects form part of a broader effort by the agency to deliver durable infrastructure that mitigates environmental hazards while improving road usability for residents and commuters.
In a related development, following protests by residents of Shaka Street in Irrua over severe flooding, a high-level Edo State Government team visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment.
The delegation included, Eugene Okoloise, Chairman of the Edo State Property Protection Committee, Hon. Okoyomoh Muhammed Allen Bawa and officials from the Flood and Erosion Control Agency, as well as representative of the contractor handling the intervention.
The team assured affected residents of swift government action to address the flooding.
The affected residents expressed gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for the prompt response and commitment to resolving their challenges.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has positioned environmental resilience and infrastructure development as priorities, building on earlier transitions to ensure long-term sustainability of erosion and flood control efforts in the state.
These interventions are expected to deliver lasting benefits, including safer roads, reduced property damage during rainy seasons, and enhanced economic activities in previously affected communities.
Further monitoring and additional phases of similar projects across Edo State are anticipated as the government continues its push to tackle climate-related infrastructure deficits.
