Ogun Communities Spend ₦15m on Self-Help Fixes, Beg Senator Yayi for Road Reconstruction

Mowe, Ogun — Residents and leaders of communities along the Arigbawo Road in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have called on Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (popularly known as Yayi), the senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, to facilitate the full reconstruction of the dilapidated 5.1-kilometre link road.
The appeal was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held last Sunday, June 21, 2026.
Community members expressed hope that the senator recently positioned as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Ogun State in 2027 would deliver on comments they interpreted as a commitment to the project.
Leaders highlighted that the road serves approximately 340 communities and functions as a vital link connecting to a federal road. Its poor condition has severely disrupted economic activities, forced some residents to relocate, and increased travel times.
Obafemi-Owode Zonal Community Development Committee Chairman Adeleke Gboyega explained that residents had already contributed about ₦15 million for partial palliative works, as the road requires annual maintenance.
He addressed a viral video of the senator referencing the Arigbawo Road, noting it sparked confusion among contributors who feared the project might have been diverted.
“We know him as a man who does wonders… He has embarked on over 115 roads, and when he mentioned this road, we began to look at ourselves,” Gboyega said, noting that, “The community has spent a total sum of N15 million on this road, which we have been maintaining every year… We felt we should come together to find out… before meeting the senator.”
Spokesperson for traditional chiefs, Olalekan Oyenekan, acknowledged that the road falls under state jurisdiction but urged the senator to intervene as promised. “We are appealing to him; we are not fighting him. He should please come to our aid on this road,” he stated.
Arigbawo CDC Chairman Okeowo Adeshina added that community efforts provide only temporary relief. “The condition of the road has forced some residents to relocate and affected businesses… We believe that once the road is reconstructed, people will return, investments will increase, and commercial activities will pick up again.”
Omu-Aleku Area CDC Chairman Oseni Monsuru described the road’s impact on daily life and expressed optimism for swift action. “This road we are talking about is 5.1 kilometres long… What we want is for our incoming governor to let us feel his impact in our community. We hope that by next month, work on the road will commence.”
Senator Adeola, who has a track record of road infrastructure projects in Ogun West, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
The Arigbawo Road’s rehabilitation is seen as critical for boosting commerce, improving mobility, and supporting the growing population in this peri-urban part of Obafemi-Owode LGA, even as residents are hopeful that the senator’s intervention will provide a lasting solution beyond their self-help efforts.
