Edo Launches Rehabilitation of Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre

Benin, Edo – The Edo State Government has announced the commencement of the rehabilitation and comprehensive overhaul of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, as part of efforts to preserve the state’s cultural heritage.
Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration is spearheading the project, which also includes proposed renovations to sections of the Palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.
According to a statement by Hon. Haruna Braimoh, Special Adviser on Public Affairs and Media to the Governor, the initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to culture as a driver of development, tourism, economic growth, and social cohesion.
“The rehabilitation of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre will restore the facility to its rightful place as the foremost destination for cultural exhibitions, festivals, conferences, artistic performances, and tourism,” the statement said, as it is expected to generate opportunities for job creation, youth engagement, and broader economic prosperity.
The government described the move as a response to the yearnings of Edo people, executed despite earlier budgetary constraints.
Officials highlighted it as evidence of prudent fiscal management and a balanced approach that combines infrastructure, security, healthcare, education, agriculture, and economic development with the protection of historical institutions.
The Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre has historically served as a key venue for cultural activities in the state. Its restoration is expected to strengthen Edo State’s identity and appeal as a tourism destination.
No specific timeline or detailed cost for the rehabilitation project has been released in the statement.
The government indicated that the initiative forms part of its wider developmental agenda aimed at delivering dividends of democracy across sectors while safeguarding the state’s cultural legacy.
