Makinde Hails security forces after rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers

Ibadan, Oyo — Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed profound gratitude for the safe rescue of 39 schoolchildren and 7 teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area (LGA) on May 15, 2026.

The victims were freed after 56 days following a coordinated security operation.

In a statement posted on his verified X account (@seyimakinde) on Friday, July 10, 2026, Governor Makinde said: “Really grateful for the safe return of the children and teachers abducted from Oriire LGA 56 days ago. Our priority now is to ensure they are reunited with their families and support their rehabilitation after this traumatic experience.”

He commended the security agencies involved for their sacrifices, adding, “We also commend the security agencies that took part in the rescue operations for their sacrifices. May the souls of those who paid the ultimate price rest in peace and may God comfort their families.”

The governor’s message notably made no direct reference to President Bola Tinubu or the federal government, despite reports of federal involvement in the operation. This omission has drawn attention amid known political differences.

On May 15, 2026, heavily armed gunmen—reportedly linked to the Ansaru terrorist group raided three schools in communities including Yawota and Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire LGA: Baptist Nursery and Primary School, L.A. Primary School, and Community Grammar School.

They abducted 39 pupils some as young as toddlers and 7 teachers, marching them into nearby forests, including areas around the Old Oyo National Park.

One teacher was reportedly killed during or shortly after the attack, and another, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded in captivity.

Security forces, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and local vigilantes, conducted intelligence-led operations.

These efforts neutralized several kidnappers, arrested eight (now in DSS custody), and pressured the abductors into abandoning the victims without any reported ransom payment or prisoner exchange. No collateral damage to the hostages was reported.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed the news, expressing “profound joy” and commending the security agencies for their round-the-clock efforts.

In a statement, he highlighted the successful intelligence-driven operation and directed support for the victims’ rehabilitation in coordination with the Oyo State Government.

The victims are undergoing medical checks in Ibadan before full reunification with their families.

Governor Makinde has prioritized their psychological support and recovery.
