CSO Condemns Police Brutality, Extortion of Youths in Edo

Auchi, Edo – The Alliance for Security and Social Justice has expressed deep concern over allegations of police extortion, brutality, unlawful detention, intimidation, and abuse of power reportedly committed against five youths along the Igarra–Auchi Express Road on July 7, 2026.

In a strongly worded press statement issued Saturday by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Jeffery Nzekwe, the group described the incidents said to have occurred around Ago–Ikpeshi as disturbing and a serious violation of the constitutional rights and fundamental freedoms of the affected citizens.

While acknowledging the Nigeria Police Force’s role in combating crime and ensuring public safety, ASSJ emphasized that no officer is above the law.

“Every allegation of misconduct must be investigated thoroughly, impartially, and transparently,” the statement read.

The group stressed the need for due process, urging that all parties be given a fair hearing.

The civil society organization called on key police authorities including the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, and the Police Service Commission to immediately institute an independent investigation into the allegations.

“If the investigation establishes that any police officer was involved in extortion, assault, unlawful detention, destruction of property, or any other abuse of office, such officers must be brought to book and prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement demanded.

“Accountability is essential to restoring public confidence in law enforcement.”, it noted

The group further urged that if the victims suffered financial loss, physical injury, or damage to personal property, appropriate restitution and justice measures should be provided.

The group appealed to members of the public with credible information, documentary evidence, photographs, videos, medical reports, or any other relevant materials to submit them to the appropriate investigative authorities to help establish the truth.

“The fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes in Edo North requires the trust and cooperation of the people,” ASSJ noted, adding “Law enforcement officers should focus their efforts on protecting lives and property while respecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.”

The group vowed to continue monitoring the matter closely and advocating for justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

The Igarra–Auchi Express Road has seen frequent security operations, including recent police efforts to foil kidnapping attempts in the area. However, recurring complaints about roadside policing practices have fueled public distrust in parts of Edo North.
