Federal Government Suspends WAEC, NECO Examination Fee Hike

The Federal Government has withdrawn its proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by WAEC and the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) by NECO, following widespread public backlash.

In a statement issued Monday by the Federal Ministry of Education, signed by Director of Press and Public Relations Boriowo Folasade, the government announced the suspension of the fee adjustment letter dated June 18, 2026.

The decision allows for a “comprehensive review and broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders” before any final decision.

The move comes amid concerns over the financial burden on students and families amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Nigerians welcomed the reversal, with many praising the government’s responsiveness, particularly toward ensuring access to education.
