Extrajudicial killing: Civil society coalition demands Police accountability, issues 30-day notice

Warri, Delta — A coalition of civil society organisations and human rights advocates, led by AHMWFES (The Bail is Free Campaign Organisation), has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, the Senate, and the Police Service Commission, demanding transparency and judicial accountability in the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi.

Ogidi was shot dead on April 26, 2026, by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.

The group, which includes allies across Nigeria and is based in Edo State, raised concerns over the conduct of officers at the Nigeria Police Force Delta State Command, especially the Ekpan Area Command.

In a petition signed by Comrade Solomon Orukpe-Idiogbe (Focal Person, Coalition of Civil Society Organisations) and Oni-Edigin Justice (Director General, AHMWFES), the group asked the police to clarify whether the allegations surrounding Ogidi’s death are true, If the deceased was ever charged before a competent court, whether any lawful judicial process was followed before his death.

Also, that all relevant case files, charge sheets, or court documents be made available for independent review, and the circumstances of the 2022 death of Ogidi’s older brother, Oghenerume Morrison Ogbidi, in police custody also be reopened and reviewed.

The family, particularly their mother Stella Ogidi, has expressed deep grief over losing two sons in similar circumstances.

On May 5, 2026, the coalition’s fact-finding team visited the Ekpan Area Command to seek clarification but was allegedly denied access. Despite vehicles believed to belong to Area Commander ACP Aliyu Shaba being parked on the premises, the team was told he was “not on seat.”

Requests to meet the Area Crime Officer or Second-in-Command were also turned down, and calls to the Area Commander went unanswered. The group described the officers’ attitude as unprofessional, hostile, and obstructive.

The coalition has given the Federal Government and relevant authorities a 30-day notice to address their demands.

Failure to act, they warned, will trigger a nationwide peaceful protest calling for comprehensive police reforms. They also plan to approach the ECOWAS Court of Justice and draw international attention to issues of police misconduct, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and abuse of power.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier described the April 26 incident as an extrajudicial killing after a viral video showed ASP Nuhu Usman shooting Ogidi while he was restrained.

The police dismissed ASP Usman and other officers involved, initiated disciplinary proceedings, and forwarded the case file to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for prosecution.

This case has reignited public debate on police accountability and reform in Nigeria, as stakeholders are expected to monitor developments closely as the 30-day deadline progresses.
