Senate passes bill to allow foreigners get NIN

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill for a second reading that allows foreigners residing in Nigeria to acquire the National Identification Number (NIN).

On Tuesday, the Senate approved a bill for a second reading that aims to grant all individuals, including non-citizens residing in Nigeria, the privilege of acquiring and utilizing the National Identification Number (NIN).

The proposal aims to swap punitive measures with administrative actions in order to promote adherence to NIN usage rules, without unfairly burdening individuals with legal repercussions.

The proposed legislation put forward by Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin from Kano North is entitled the 'National Identify Management Commission (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2024 (SB. 472).'

Senator Cyril Fasuyi (representing Ekiti North) presented the main points of the bill during the plenary session, with Senator Barau Jibrin, the sponsor, overseeing the proceedings.
